Flynn Novak wins ASP 1-star Sponsor Me Hawaii

ALA MOANA, Oahu (Friday, August 21, 2009) - Haleiwa’s Flynn Novak went two-for-two at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 1-Star Sponsor Me Hawaii today, winning his second consecutive professional surfing event here in as many summers.

Novak, 26, clung to victory by the slimmest of margins after a rapid-fire exchange of high-scoring rides between himself, runner-up Solomon Ortiz (Big Island), and third-placed Dustin Cuizon (Haleiwa), in great head-high waves. Fourth place went to Roy Powers, the No. 1 seed for the event, who is currently ranked 36th on the top-tier ASP World Tour.

The Sponsor Me Hawaii is a $10,000 ASP WQS 1-Star event that offers critical points towards qualification for the ASP World Tour and offers locals a shot at qualifying for the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing this winter.

Novak earned $2,500 for his victory today. The lone goofy-footer in the 30-minute Final, Flynn cashed in on any and all tube-riding opportunities that opened up, posting scores of 8.25 and 5.65 for a heat total of 13.9 points. Ortiz went home with $1,000 and 13.65 points. Cuizon, who posted the highest scoring ride of the final - a 9.25 for a blistering succession of backside snaps, earned $800 for his 13.15 points. Powers left with $700 and 9.75 points.

"I couldn’t even believe I made the final," said a stunned Novak. "I can’t believe this has happened. I knew what it took (to win) from last year, but last year was more about surfing than tactics. I’m stoked to pull it off in hard conditions."

Clay Marzo wins 2009 Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido

August 19, 2009: - - Huntington Beach
World Qualifying Series (WQS) 3-Star Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido

Future Fins
team rider Clay Marzo showcased his progressive surfing throughout the event, and was the in form surfer of the contest, mixing in barrel riding, aerials and his trademark throw tail maneuver.

Riding his signature Marzo fins, Clay managed to capitalize on the two best waves and comboed the field to take out the victory. “I was a little worried because it was a little mixed up out there,” Marzo said. “I got that first score and was able to relax enough to get the other one.” The talented goofy-footer posted an opening score of a solid 8.25 before closing the doors on his competitors when he logged a massive 9.25 (both out of a possible 10) for a committed reverse. "I saw this section coming and knew I needed to do something big,” Marzo said. “I did a little tack and luckily I did a big throw-tail and came out fins first and was able to spin it around.”

Clay dedicated his victory to Honolua Bay artist/surfer Ron Cassidy, who died at Puerto Escondido last year.

Simpo's weapon of choice

Simpo, stopping by Futures to fine tune his equipment before the Hurley US Open of Surfing:

Brett Simpson wins Hurley US Open of Surfing

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Sunday, July 26, 2009) – Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), 24, has claimed the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing over former ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (Coolangatta, AUS), 28, in front of an ecstatic hometown crowd, netting surfing’s biggest victory purse ever – US$100,000.

"I felt this was my chance and you don't get a lot of chances," Simpo said, still in shock after his momentous WQS six-star victory. "A local hasn't won this comp in such a long time so it means everything to me to hold down the fort at home."

"It is a home court advantage but I was still looking at what Mick was doing because he's such a great surfer," Simpo acknowledged in front of HB's eclectic crowd. "It's amazing to wake up and be at home. It's just like Mick at Snapper. It pays off a lot."

The final began with three exchanges that proved to be the deciding waves. Simpo went left. Fanning answered. Simpo went right. Fanning did too. But then, Fanning jumped on a smaller left which proved fatal. Simpson immediately linked into a solid righthander, threw a sizeable hack before launching into a massive air reverse for a 9.1. And this was all in the first ten minutes. Fortunately for the local boy, the HB southside -- which saw waves up to triple-overhead (yes, that big) earlier in the week -- went strangely quiet for the rest of their thirty-minute duel.

U.S. OPEN OF SURFING FINAL RESULTS:
1 - Brett Simpson (USA) 16.93
2 - Mick Fanning (AUS) 12.50
