News From Down Under
Antman’s Update
As global warming and fuel emissions are headline news, pollution and sewage are contaminating our oceans, reefs are dieing and dolphins and whales are being slaughtered. One man going out on a limb to do something about these ocean crimes is Dave Rastovich.
Rasta has spent the last month surfing the wave abundant coastline of Chile with Roman Navarro, Chile’s best and craziest surfer. Not only have they scored a variety of great waves, but they have also attended meetings, demonstrations and rallied an amazing amount of support to help stop illegal whaling in the lead up to the annual meeting held by the International Whaling Commission in Santiago.
The outcome is controversial and strange as 72 of the 81 nation members of the International Whaling Commission met for a whole week to essentially not resolve anything. As Captain Paul Watson sums up, “the hypocrisy and the ineffectiveness of the IWC is that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is the only organization that upholds the regulations of the IWC, yet they are the only organization banned from attending the IWC meetings.
The governments are doing nothing about the on going illegal slaughtering of whales and dolphins. Rasta is pumped about the whole surf industry getting involved and utilizing the collective power of the global surfing community. You too can make a difference, just log onto www.visualpetition.com and join the quest to cleanse ocean crimes.
Rasta’s next adventure takes him to Indo where he is looking forward to trying out a range of boards and fin setups. In particular, he is really excited about some speed runs using his favourite fin, the Sea Shepherd Keel in his quiver of fishes from Dick Van Straalen. His stringerless quad, made by Gary McNeil, has been described as, "flying” in the chunky waves the southern oceans have provided in Chile.
Akila Aipa’s twin fins have been Rasta’s favourite performance boards that are perfect to throw around on the point breaks. Looking forward to checking out some footage of Rasta ripping on every surf craft imaginable in the perfect waves in Indo.
And that is what I call…
Happy Surfing
