Huntington Beach, Ca- 2/1/11- Futures Team Rider John Florence made history at the famed Pipeline by winning his second event this month. At last week’s Volcom Pipe Pro the 18-year-old prodigy took down some big names and past Pipe champions to claim his first major ASP event. Coupled with his win at the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, John Florence has shown the surfing world that his predicted dominance at the notorious North Shore break is imminent.
Throughout the Volcom Pipe Pro John showed no fault, winning all of his heats, ultimately scoring an 18.36 in the final to take the title. The final heat was a sea-saw battle with fellow Pipeline resident Jamie O’Brien that came down to one crucial exchange, where John capitalized on an extremely late drop, for a near perfect 9.93.
On the crucial exchange Florence had this to say, "Luckily, I got that one at Ain'ts. And then I saw Jamie on the first one and was like, ‘There's one behind it.' I didn't even see it coming and when I saw it I thought, 'Oh, oh...I have to paddle.' So I just paddled as hard as I could into the thing, fell to the bottom and got back into it. I was lucky my fins held.”
